How to Get Cited by Google AI Overviews

By Peter Lisoskie·August 31, 2026·6 min read

AI Overviews changed the top of the SERP

For many questions, the first thing a searcher sees is no longer a list of links — it's an AI Overview, a generated summary with cited sources at the top of the results page. Being one of those sources means being seen before anyone scrolls. Being left out means you're effectively below the fold even when you rank.

How AI Overviews select sources

Google's guidance on AI Overviews is clear that they're grounded in the same systems as Search — crawling, indexing, and quality signals — but with an emphasis on authoritative, well-structured content that directly answers the query. The practical implication: the pages that get cited are the ones Google can confidently understand and verify.

What you can control

You can't force inclusion, but you can remove the reasons you'd be skipped:

  • Keep your pages crawlable and indexed — don't block Google.
  • Use schema markup so Google understands what your content means.
  • Structure content with clear headings and direct, factual answers.
  • Add authority signals — author attribution, dates, and internal links.
  • Answer the specific questions people search, in plain language.

Checking whether you appear

Search the questions your customers ask and look at whether your domain shows up among the cited sources in the AI Overview. Track it over time — as with all AI citation, the change is gradual, and consistent improvement is the signal that matters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control whether my content appears in AI Overviews?

You can't opt in or out of AI Overviews directly, and there's no tag that guarantees inclusion. What you can control is whether Google can crawl and understand your content — via robots.txt, structured data, clear structure, and authority signals — which is what actually determines whether you're selected as a source.

Do AI Overviews cite the same pages that rank?

Often, but not always. AI Overviews synthesize from Google's index and cite authoritative, well-structured sources — which frequently overlap with highly-ranked pages, but the selection logic is different from ranking. A page can be citable without being #1.
