Why People Choose, Part 6: Turning Experience Into Evidence

By Peter Lisoskie·August 31, 2026·6 min read

Experience alone isn't evidence

A business can possess extraordinary expertise, decades of experience, and meaningful customer outcomes — yet none of it automatically becomes part of the representation AI constructs. It must first become observable as evidence.

That's the gap most businesses never close: experience that exists only inside the business is invisible to the systems now deciding whether to recommend it.

What evidence engineering is

Evidence engineering doesn't manufacture expertise or invent authority. It begins with the experience you already have, and intentionally identifies the parts of that experience capable of addressing the uncertainties your customers are trying to resolve.

Stories, proof, outcomes, comparisons, explanations, and documented experience all become different ways of making that evidence observable.

The Evidence Graph

Once evidence becomes observable, it doesn't stay isolated. One customer outcome reinforces a claim. A story gives context to an outcome. A comparison reveals judgment that would otherwise stay invisible. A documented experience strengthens the evidence around several different questions.

Gradually, those relationships form an interconnected architecture: the Evidence Graph. The opportunity isn't to manufacture authority you don't have — it's to make more of the authority you've already earned observable.

The Selection Principle: experience must become evidence

This chapter's distilled insight:

  • Experience alone cannot influence how AI represents a business. Experience must become observable as Evidence capable of resolving the uncertainty that matters within a particular Decision Context.

What this means for your business

Ask yourself: how much of what we've learned, proven, and solved has actually become observable as evidence — and how much still exists only inside the business? The answer to that question is usually the fastest path to being recommended.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn my experience into something AI can use?

Make it observable: document outcomes, publish case studies, explain your judgment, and answer the real questions customers ask. Evidence engineering isn't about inventing authority — it's about surfacing the experience you already have.

What is the Evidence Graph?

The interconnected web of evidence a business makes observable. Outcomes reinforce claims, stories give context to outcomes, and comparisons reveal judgment — together they form a structure AI can use to build a representation.
